On damp pebbles, mixed with wooden chips, etc, Hontani, Imoo, Kii, leg. Kumagusu Minakata, Oct. 19, 1928.
The central, the longest branch 6.5 cm. l., Total ht. 12 cm., 11 cm. br. Branches 2 – 5 mm. thick, stem 4 – 10 mm. thick base flattened or subcylindrical, abrupt. Shaped like flattened antless, from 2 – 3 – 12 branched, compressed with a deep shallow furrow, or longitudinally rugose, transversely undulate. Fleshy, firm, but fragile, fragile as dry, beautiful-vermillion, the brighter the more distant from the vermillion base, above which up to the lower portion of the branched densely then thinly powdered with deeply sulphureous then bean-yellow-dust, branches closely dotted with minute purple brown papillae. ------------------------------------------- __ A young single growth, color like the branched one, the top shortly vermillion, elsewhere yellow. __ broken base 2.7 mm. l., 6 x 8 – 9 mm. thick. __ became much curled up after brolken __ 13 – 14 cm. l., 2 – 3.5 cm. br. at the base of the branches, where broadest. __ base rugoso-sulcate.

コメント：熊楠自身は、本菌を同定しておらず、標本もないが、見るからにカエンタケである。本菌は、食べるとかなり激しい食中毒を起こすし、粘膜などに触れるのもご法度とされる猛毒のきのこである。触感が記載されているが、味見しなかったのは幸運であろう。
